The material is a little rough as it is more like waterproof fabric.They do fit a little smaller than size, so order a size bigger, and two sizes bigger if you need space in the rear, as they are a little tighter fit in the back. I really like these shorts a lot. Basically I think these are a vast improvement on normal cargo style shorts. The material dries super fast if you get wet. There are bunches of large pockets that work great for all the junk I carry around every day. I wouldn't assume these are only for a fisherman because I don't fish at all but I love the outdoors. I followed the size chart and picked the size that was going to fit him best, and when he tried them on, they fit him perfectly. These are beautiful shorts all the way around. You have your two back pockets and your two front side pockets, but what really stood out to me were the two additional pockets a little further down the leg. Those pockets can open wide enough to fit a bottle in them, up to the size of a Coke can. That is a great thing to have on a pair of shorts, especially if you are going out and need pockets that can actually expand around what you are putting in them.The waistband is elastic, which I also love. If he goes up or down in weight, he does not have to worry about whether or not these are going to fit him. They are comfortable and they fit right around the knee area, which is exactly where a good pair of shorts should fall.I am already planning to come back and pick him up another pair in gray.
